Requirements

The minimum requirements to be a Search & Rescue team member in Kent County are:

  • Age 18+
  • Must attend an Open House Informational Meeting
  • Should be in reasonably good health, as Search and Rescue is hard work! (We do have Non-Field positions also)
  • Clean Criminal History / Background Check
  • Must have a Michigan Drivers License
  • Must take required trainings
  • Must respond at all hours of the day or night
  • Must be willing to work in less then desirable conditions
  • Must be a team player
  • Must acquire an Amateur Radio License within six months of joining

Process

  • Attend an Open House to learn about KCSAR.  These informational meetings will educate you about KCSAR.  The goal of these sessions is to help you make a sound decision about joining the busiest Search and Rescue Team in Michigan.
  • Please register to attend an Open House Informational meeting. (link)
  • Then attend an Open House.

Applicant Processing Flow 

1)     Interested individuals will attend an Open House/Informational Session.

2)     Interested individual will successfully pass a Physical Fitness Test.

3)     Interested individuals will complete required applicant documents.

4)     KCSD will conduct a background and criminal record checks.

5)     The Emergency Manager will notify the Board of Directors of their decision.

6)     KCEST Leadership will review information related to applicant.

7)     KCEST Leadership will select applicants for an interview.

8)     KCEST Leadership will decide to either accept or decline an applicant.

9)     Approved Applicant will be placed on probationary status.

Independent Study

All members need to have the following training to stay current with the team. While waiting you can always do some independent study programs from FEMA.  These are independent study courses and free of charge. See the links below:
